One of the preferred surgical operations during breast cancer is lumpectomy. With lumpectomy, some of the healthy tissues around the breast tissues and cancerous tissues are removed. Of course, in order for this procedure to be performed, the doctor must evaluate some factors. Before the lumpectomy procedure, the patient is examined with different tests depending on the size and, the stage of the cancer, the age of the patient, and whether additional treatment is needed. Then, if the doctor finds it appropriate, this procedure can be done.
In breast cancer, in some of the cases tumors can be felt by hand. If the tumor is palpable before the lumpectomy procedure, no marking is needed. However, in cases where the tumor is not palpable, it may be necessary to make a marking by the doctor with special instruments or to inject radioactive material into the bulk. Afterward, the bulk is removed.
After removal of the bulk from the breast, the piece can be sent to pathology for examination, if necessary. After examining the removed tissue, it may be necessary to repeat the procedure if it is determined that enough intact tissue cannot be removed. In some cases, it may even be necessary to remove the entire breast to purify cancerous cells, according to the pathology report. After the necessary examinations, the specialist doctors give detailed information to the patients about the process. Because the needs and health conditions of each patient vary. However, it is important to remember that lumpectomy is a surgical procedure aimed at protecting the breast rather than removing the entire breast.
After the lumpectomy procedure, the patient may need to continue receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy for a while, which is very important to prevent cancerous cells. In some patients, it may be necessary to start radiotherapy treatment before lumpectomy. As Fibo Health, we research specialist physicians and hospitals for you and make great efforts to offer you the best options.
