Nephrectomy

What is Nephrectomy?

It is usually the beginning of the surgical procedure to be performed between donor and recipient individuals for kidney transplantation. If the tests performed by the doctor before the nephrectomy are positive and there are no factors preventing the transplant, kidney transplant surgery is performed. The kidney from the donor individual is transferred to the recipient, who will be taken by specialist doctors under appropriate conditions.

Can Diseased Kidneys Be Removed During Nephrectomy?

If the kidneys are at risk of infection and are in a condition to harm patients, yes, diseased kidneys are removed. In addition, although the removal of the infected kidney is a preferred procedure before transplantation, it can also be performed during transplantation if necessary.

Open Nephrectomy

In open nephrectomy surgery, the kidney is placed in the right or left groin of the patient, taking into account the conditions. The kidney is placed behind the peritoneum, and connected to the artery, vein, and urinary tract, and the procedure is completed. Of course, after this surgical procedure, the patient should rest for a while. Moreover, in this procedure performed by urologists, a stent is inserted after a few weeks to ensure a healthy flow to the urinary tract.

Closed Nephrectomy

The biggest difference of closed nephrectomy is that the procedure proceeds with the help of a camera inserted through a 1-centimeter incision, without the need for 15-20 cm long incisions. While the specialist physician can support the endoscopic instruments by hand, the procedure can be completed with only endoscopic instruments when necessary. It is useful to know those small surgical incisions are positioned in a way that does not cause pain. It should also be noted that if the specialist doctor needs to insert his/her hand into the abdomen, the incisions will be enlarged.
