Nephrectomy is a medical name given to the operation in which the kidney is removed. This method can be performed in two ways: open nephrectomy and closed nephrectomy. As Fibo Health, we would like to state that our specialist doctors and their teams are very experienced in this field.
If there is a situation that indicates that kidney transplantation should be performed, this situation is first defined by the doctor. Nephrectomy may be needed while predicting how to proceed afterward. In some cases, the patient’s kidneys need to be removed. For example, if there is an infection in the kidney or if there is a risk of cancer, this kidney, which is considered a diseased kidney, must be removed from the person before or during the transplant process. However, if there is no such disease in the kidney, there is no need to remove the kidney.
As a method that has been used for many years, the open nephrectomy method is usually performed on patients with kidney failure. The kidney is placed in the person’s left or right groin, depending on the situation and suitability. If the pancreas transplant is to be performed with a kidney transplant, the right groin is reserved for the pancreas, while the left groin is reserved for the kidney. However, it should be noted that the priority for kidney transplantation in other patient groups is the right groin.
During the nephrectomy procedure, with an incision made in the groin, the kidney is placed behind the peritoneum and vascular and urinary tract connections are provided. Thus, a stent is placed in the urinary tract along with the kidney that begins to function, but this stent is removed after a few weeks. After the closure of the operation, the patient is recommended not to force himself/herself too much and not to lift heavy, and to rest a lot.
