Voice Deepening Surgery

People may need a voice change for various reasons. For example, a promoted person's desire to have a deeper and more authoritative voice, or a transgender person's voice to match their new gender. Medical interventions for these and similar reasons are called voice aesthetic operations. The operation to thicken the voice is called voice deepening surgery.

How is Voice Aesthetics Performed?

Voice aesthetics is a new concept and it can be applied more widely and more easily with the surgical techniques and medical technologies developed in the last 10 years. The term aesthetic in voice may be perceived as a utopian nomenclature, but today, normal voices can be changed with existing surgical techniques, and voice aesthetics that are close to the target can be achieved with this technique or combinations of these techniques.

Voice deepening surgery is performed for patients who have a structurally thin voice, mutational falsetto, congenital vocal cord collapse (sulcus vocalis), or who want to thicken their voice after gender change. Of course, the patient’s suitability is determined after consultation with the doctor.

How is Voice Deepening Surgery Performed?

Although there are different techniques in Voice Deepening Surgery, the most common type is the Type 3 thyroplasty technique. The surgery can be performed through the mouth and neck and is usually performed under local anesthesia. By shrinking the thyroid cartilage, the vocal cords are loosened and the voice is thickened. Since the patient is awake, the sound pitch is adjusted according to the patient’s request.

Two other techniques that are becoming more common today are Relaxation thyroplasty and Baklava thyroplasty. They are performed under local anesthesia and through a similar incision. You do not stay in the hospital after voice augmentation surgery and it is not a painful operation. After the operation, the voice is rested for a week.
