The patient may need to show some symptoms before gastroscopy can be performed. For example, gastroscopy is performed in symptoms such as abdominal pain, heartburn, gas complaints, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, or anemia, and it is aimed to prevent the problem if any. In addition to these, the gastroscopy technique is also used in cases where tissue detection is required, biopsies, etc. Of course, you should share the necessary conditions with your doctor and decide on the appropriate treatment methods together with your doctor.
Before the gastroscopy procedure, the stomach must be completely empty. The patient is asked not to eat or drink anything for 12 hours before the procedure. Of course, this situation will be reminded to the person by the doctor. In addition, some drugs are given to the patient during endoscopy and these drugs can cause numbness. For this reason, it would be better to have a companion with the patient. The patient is expected to be ready at the hospital or clinic 15 minutes before the examination. You will be asked to read, fill out and sign a form that gives your consent and gives information about possible complications. You should also share your regular medications with your doctor.
Before the procedure, the patient’s throat area is anesthetized with the help of local anesthesia. Afterward, if deemed necessary, intravenous sedatives can be given to the patient. Gastroscopy is a procedure that takes 10-15 minutes. During this process, the person can breathe easily and hear his/her surroundings, but he/she does not feel any pain.
After gastroscopy, the patient is asked to rest in the restroom until the effects of the drugs wear off. However, there is no need for the patient to be hospitalized after this procedure. He/she can return home within the same day. He/she will only need to visit his/her doctor again a few days later for a checkup. By sharing the patient’s assessment, the doctor can draw up new plans or complete the treatment. It is important to remember that after this procedure, patients should not drive for 12 hours for their own and other people’s well-being, and should avoid work that will tire their bodies.
