As Fibo Health, we have compiled for you in this article what "discectomy" surgery, which is more commonly referred to as endoscopic discectomy, is and in which situations it is performed more.
What is Discectomy?
Discectomy is surgery to remove a herniated or damaged disc from your spinal cord. The purpose of discectomy is to relieve the symptoms caused by the pressure created by a herniated disc placed on the spinal nerve. Discectomy is not necessary for everyone with a herniated disc. About 10 percent of people with a hernia will need surgery. Discectomy is often used when older treatments, such as medication and physical therapy have failed to relieve the symptoms of a herniated disc. However, in order to determine these conditions, of course, you should consult your specialist doctor.
Why is Discectomy Surgery Performed?
Discectomy is done to reduce the pressure of the herniated disc (also called a slipped, ruptured, or protruding disc or prolapsed disc) that stays on the spinal nerve. Your doctor may recommend discectomy:
If your symptoms are still not resolved after six weeks with conventional treatments such as medication or physical therapy,
If you have a ruptured disc in your spinal canal pressing on the nerve,
If you have trouble standing or walking,
If the pain radiates to your hip or legs.
