In the presence of various symptoms and abnormal physical examination findings in their patients, physicians may apply for a biopsy to clarify the underlying condition. In addition to radiological imaging methods in the detection of formations such as cancer, a biopsy is performed to examine the cells that make up the tumor tissue.
The biopsy is the most important method for the definitive diagnosis of structures formed by cells that divide uncontrollably, such as cancer. Although there is a clear relationship between the biopsy procedure and cancer, this does not mean that the result of the biopsy procedure always results in cancer.
The main difference in the formation of the types of biopsy procedure varies according to how much of the tissue is taken for further examination. Removal of only part of the tissue or organ is called an incisional biopsy, while removal of the entire tissue or organ for further examination is referred to as an excisional biopsy.
Situations in which various abnormalities are detected in blood values may raise suspicion of the presence of a malignant disease originating from the bone marrow. In order to eliminate this doubt, it may be considered to take a sample from the bone marrow by biopsy.
The type of biopsy used in cases where tissue samples from the lungs, bladder, or intestines are required is an endoscopic biopsy. Endoscopes, which have a thin tube structure with a camera at the tip and various surgical tools for performing the biopsy, allow both the biopsy process to be performed and the simultaneous image acquisition.
If the area to be sampled cannot be reached with other biopsy methods, surgical interventions can be applied for the biopsy procedure. The physician who performs the surgical biopsy aims to reach the suspicious area by making a small incision in the skin.
