Thyroid Function Tests (İncluding T3, T4, TSH)

Thyroid glands are responsible for producing certain hormones, and thyroid function tests are applied to control and evaluate the functioning of these hormones, which have various functions in the body. So what exactly does the thyroid gland do and what do these tests show us?

What is Thyroid Gland?

The thyroid gland is a gland located in the anterior lower part of the neck. Its most important task is to ensure the production and secretion of T3 and T4 thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones, on the other hand, provide blood circulation in the body and balance metabolism by reaching each tissue. These thyroid glands, which have metabolic functions in many valuable organs of the body, are of high importance for health. Since excess or deficiency of these hormones can cause problems, various thyroid function tests are applied. So what do these thyroid function tests consist of?

TSH Test

One of the best ways to check that the thyroid glands are working properly is to measure the level of TSH in the blood. Because TSH, which varies in blood level, acts as an early warning system depending on the problems that may occur. This warning system is activated when the thyroid hormone level in the body is either too high or too low. If there are no high or low values in the test result, it is possible to say that the patient is healthy, while various precautions can be taken by the doctor in other cases.

T4 Test

It is possible to say that the substance we call T4 is actually the main form of thyroid hormone circulating in the blood. The task of T4 is to measure the free hormones and how they can affect the protein levels related to these hormones by entering the body tissues. With the tests performed, it can be observed whether there is any disease in the body related to this hormone.

T3 Test

The main purpose of applying T3 tests is to diagnose hyperthyroidism or to check its condition. If there is any abnormality, the T3 test is applied for examination purposes to prevent diseases.

Thyroid Antibody Tests

Our immune system produces antibodies to protect one from various bacteria and viruses. Sometimes it has been observed that antibodies are produced in the thyroid glands to protect us from various diseases. Sometimes, thyroid antibody tests can be applied to patients in order to measure the level of these antibodies produced against cell proteins and to prevent diseases, if any.
