In general, almost one-third of patients diagnosed with thymoma state that they do not have any symptoms. However, patients with symptoms usually have cough and chest pain. In addition, patients may experience shortness of breath, their voices may be hoarse, their appetite may decrease and they may have difficulty in swallowing. Rarely, it is witnessed that thymoma also brings with it a syndrome called SVC.
The SVC, on the other hand, is our primary vein that carries blood from the upper part of our body to the heart. SVC syndrome is also caused by swelling of the neck, chest, face, and all visible veins in the patient’s upper body due to this vein. Sometimes headache and dizziness are also among the symptoms of SVC syndrome. If you have these symptoms, you should seek emergency medical attention immediately.
In order to diagnose thymoma, a doctor should be consulted if there are any symptoms. However, if it is desired to have a check-up even though there are no symptoms, it is possible to diagnose thymoma by examining the chest area in imaging techniques such as x-ray. It is most logical to seek help from imaging techniques such as CT, MRI, PET because the experts stated that they did not find it necessary to do a biopsy for thymoma and that imaging techniques were sufficient.
The primary treatment for thymoma is the surgical removal. However, necessary examinations are made by the doctor to determine whether it is necessary to remove the tumor before the procedure. The process may be affected if the tumor has begun to spread to nearby tissues and organs. In cases where the tumor cannot be surgically removed, chemotherapy and radiation techniques may be required to control the tumor before surgery.
