Tumors may develop from soft tissue. For example, moles, warts, benign tumors. Likewise, sebaceous cysts are benign tumors. There are also skin cancers that we need to intervene and care about. It is essential to consider skin cancers in two separate groups. The most important of these is the skin cancer called malignant melanoma. It originates from the melanocytes that give the skin its color. Its behavior is completely different from other skin cancers. The skin cancers we see frequently are basal cell or spinal cell skin cancers. It is usually seen in the head and neck. It is more likely to occur in older ages. They are much less likely to be life-threatening than melanoma.
Skin cancer, that is, melanoma, can suddenly appear on normal skin without warning, or it can develop on a pre-existing mole. For this reason, it is necessary to know the location and appearance of moles in the body well so that the changes can be perceived. It is possible to confuse melanoma moles with other atypical moles. Sometimes melanoma may be mistaken for a normal mole, but that mole may have been melanoma from the very beginning.
Other warning signs are changes in the surface of the mole, such as peeling, oozing, bleeding, or swelling or blistering on the mole. There may also be changes in feeling such as itching, tenderness, and pain on the mole. However, the relevant physician (usually a dermatologist) should advise on the necessity of removing an abnormal mole or monitoring it closely.
It is recommended to consult a doctor if:
A (Asymmetry): If one half of the mole is not like the other half (in color and/or shape).
B (Border): If the borders of the mole are irregular (indented).
C (Color): If the color of the mole is not homogeneous (two or more colors such as brown, black, red, gray, white are present together or if there is a mottled appearance).
D (Diameter): If the mole is larger than 6 mm in diameter (roughly larger than the diameter of an eraser pencil).
E(Evolution): Melanoma will often change characteristics, such as size, shape or color. Unlike most benign moles, melanoma tends to change over time.
