Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery

Although the cause of most congenital heart diseases is not known exactly today, it has been accepted that some factors may cause these diseases. Some of these reasons are the presence of congenital heart disease in the mother, father, or one of their close relatives, consanguineous marriage, unconscious drug use and infections (rubella), exposure to radiation or x-rays during pregnancy, diabetes mellitus of the mother, and alcohol use during pregnancy. Apart from these, congenital heart disease is more common in genetic anomalies such as Down and Turner Syndrome.

Congenital Heart Diseases

Ventricular Septal Defect is the most common congenital heart disease in childhood, which is the subject of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery and constitutes 15-20% of all congenital heart diseases. More than 90% of children born with congenital heart diseases have a normal or near-normal quality of life and the probability of survival with the operations and interventions to be performed.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Ventricular Septal Defect

VSD is suspected by hearing a murmur on physical examination. Frequent lung infections and complaints of not gaining weight in these children are reported by the family. A definitive diagnosis is made by echocardiography. Angiography is also performed if necessary. If the VSD is not very small, its treatment is surgery. It is usually operated under the age of one according to the patient’s complaints. VSD is turned off.

Down Syndrome and Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery

Down Syndrome occurs in every 800-1000 births and is related to the anomaly of the 21st chromosome. Looking at the statistics, 40% of babies born with Down Syndrome have congenital heart disease. Complete Atrioventricular Septal Defect constitutes 40% of these heart diseases. Apart from this, Ventricular Septal Defect, Tetrology of Fallot, Atrial Septal Defect are frequently seen. Babies born with Down Syndrome should definitely be investigated for congenital heart disease by echocardiography. Early diagnosis and treatment are important in children with Down syndrome, as the pressure in the pulmonary vessels due to heart disease(Pulmonary Hypertension) causes damage earlier in life.
