Pectus excavatum is a chest wall deformity. There is an inward collapse of the chest wall. The sternum, which is known as the board of faith, and the ribs that join with it have collapsed into the chest wall.
Pectus excavatum is popularly known as “shoe chest”, “shoemaker’s chest” or “sunken chest”. It is the most common structural disorder of the chest wall. The exact cause is not known.
