The lung is the organ that allows us to take the oxygen that is the basic need of our body. When any damage occurs to the opposite side, one of the body’s basic needs is interrupted, and this can have very serious consequences. Lung damage can occur as a result of different diseases or conditions. The most common diseases that cause problems are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung scarring, increased blood pressure in the lungs, and cystic fibrosis.
In order for the lung transplantation to take place, certain tests are performed on the patient, and approval is obtained. The patient is then placed on a waiting list until a donor is found. Until the time of transplantation comes, the problems in the lungs are taken care of by doctors with various drugs and oxygen treatments. If necessary, the person is invited to the rehabilitation program. Lung transplantation is performed immediately after a suitable donor is found.
After the lung transplantation, the patient is taken to the intensive care unit for a few days. How long he/she will stay in the intensive care unit may vary depending on his/her health and current conditions. During this process, the patient’s breathing is provided by mechanical ventilators. In order for the person not to feel pain after the transplantation and for the transplanted organ not to be rejected by the body, various drugs are administered to the patient during this adaptation period.
After lung transplantation, it is very important for the patient to pay attention to his/her general health and to follow the recommendations of his/her doctor. First of all, it is necessary to use the medications given by the doctor regularly and without interruption and to comply with the treatment plan. It should not be neglected to go to the controls on a regular basis. Of course, adopting a healthy lifestyle will be the most important step in order to prevent a reoccurrence of a problem in his/her lungs.
