Gastrointestinal examinations (GI exams) are used to identify and treat abnormalities in your GI tract. The GI tract is a long tube that carries food throughout your body. This tract starts from your mouth and flows through your esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines. With GI examinations, the findings and treatments of the organs in this channel are advanced.

Why Gastrointestinal Examinations?

GI exams are progressing as safe, effective, and painless. X-rays are used to create an X-ray film of your GI tract (fluoroscopy). With these films, it is possible to see how well your GI organs are working. Different types of GI exams can be performed as required.

Why Are Gastrointestinal Examinations Performed?

GI exams are used to evaluate, diagnose and treat conditions related to your GI tract. These examinations include:

Barium swallow, which examines your throat, upper esophagus, and ability to swallow.
Upper GI series that examines the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum).
Barium enema (also called lower GI series) that examines the large intestine (colon).

How is the Examination Performed?

It is possible to perform a GI exam as an outpatient procedure or during a hospital stay. The issues that determine how it will be done are related to the reason for the examination and the treatment methods prescribed.

Most often, you drink a liquid barium milkshake just before the procedure. It is also possible for a tube to be inserted into your rectum to allow the barium to flow into your large intestine (colon) instead. You must lie on an examination table or stand behind the X-ray machine. You may be asked to hold your breath for a short time while the X-ray is taken.

By sending your X-ray images to the monitor, all the details about your GI tract are also projected. The shape, size, and function of the channel can be viewed in detail. If there is any abnormality, this abnormality is emphasized with barium. GI exams are not painful but you may not like the flavors of barium or other substances if you swallow them. However, this is a quick process.
