Intervention with coronary bypass, which is a surgical procedure, is aimed at opening the clogged arteries. Because these arteries feed the heart, if they become blocked, life-threatening consequences can occur. For this reason, replacing the veins that can be taken from different parts of the patient’s body and the artery leading to the heart in order to prevent loss of function is of great importance for the restoration of blood circulation. This entire operation is also called coronary bypass.
Coronary bypass surgery can be applied to a stopped or working heart, and open or endoscopic methods can be preferred depending on the type of case. Of course, in this method, which is applied under anesthesia, the health status of the person and whether they have different diseases are also followed. Replacing the clogged artery leading to the heart of the patient with a healthy artery (for example, taken from the leg) to be taken from the patient is called coronary bypass surgery. The areas where the taken health vein is preferred are usually the left chest, leg or forearm. The most suitable vessel for the person’s health condition is selected and removed with the required length, and the surgery is completed for those stitched to the coronary artery.
Coronary bypass, which is a surgical operation that may be needed in various situations, can be preferred primarily in patients with more than one vascular disease. In addition, if the person’s vein cannot be opened with the stent method and surgery is required, bypass is preferred. In some cases, the vessels of the patients can be occluded again even if they are opened it before with non-surgical methods such as a stent. In such cases, bypass is preferred as it is inevitable. Of course, your doctor, who will follow you closely, will decide in which cases bypass surgery will be healthier. As Fibo Health, we are ready to help you find that doctor you are looking for!
The total duration of coronary bypass surgery differs depending on whether the surgery is performed with an open or closed method. In addition to the number of vessels to be bypassed, another factor affecting the duration of the operation is that the operation is performed on working or stopped heart. Today, coronary bypass operations, which are mostly carried out with minimally invasive methods, can take approximately 3 to 6 hours.
