Colonoscopy has an extremely important place in the early diagnosis of important diseases such as intestinal polyps and cancer. In addition to imaging for diagnosis, colonoscopy, which is also used to take tissue samples from the suspected part or to remove polyps encountered during imaging, is also a treatment method in this respect. Before answering the question of how a colonoscopy is done, it is necessary to understand what a colonoscopy is.
Biopsy, which has no health hazard when performed by a specialist physician under appropriate conditions, is performed using different equipment and techniques depending on the organ where it is performed. Some biopsies are performed with imaging, some are performed during and after surgery, and some are performed under local anesthesia.
Colonoscopy is used to intervene in the existing bleeding in the large intestine, which is the last part of the digestive system and to treat early colon cancer formations. It is also a short-term application that does not require hospitalization. The colonoscope device, which is used to view the rectum and large intestine in detail by entering through the anus, consists of a flexible tube with a diameter of 1 cm and a length of approximately 60 cm.
The images obtained thanks to the cold light source and optical imaging system at the end are projected onto the monitor and simultaneously recorded on the computer. In the light of the images obtained, the physician can diagnose many problems in the large intestine. It can also be applied for detailed examination of the relevant tissue in the laboratory environment, by taking a sample tissue piece from the suspicious area, or in other words, by performing a biopsy.
If a colonoscopy is recommended by the physician, the physician receives detailed information from the patient about the medications the patient uses regularly and existing diabetes, heart, and lung disorders. After the date of colonoscopy is determined, the physician may restrict the consumption of certain foods. Solid foods should not be consumed the day before the colonoscopy. In addition, before the procedure, nothing should be eaten or drunk after midnight.
