Bronchoscopy

Bronchoscopy examine is a procedure performed to see the respiratory tract in detail during the diagnosis and treatment of various lung diseases. It is done with a device called a bronchoscope. Bronchoscopy is a method that can be applied not only for diagnosis but also for therapeutic purposes.

Why is Bronchoscopy Done?

In case of any infection in the lungs (especially pneumonia in smokers),
Cough that does not go away despite treatment,
Taking biopsy from lung tissue,
Suspicion of lung tumor and removal of a part from the tumor,
Clearing mucus or removing a blockage such as a tumor,
Placing a stent (a small tube) in the airway to keep the blocked airway open,
In case of bleeding in the lung, determining the location of the bleeding and stopping it,
Taking a biopsy from the lymph nodes near the lungs,
Also bronchoscopy can be performed to remove foreign matters blocking the respiratory tract.

How is Bronchoscopy Procedure Performed?

Bronchoscopy is a procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia and general anesthesia. During the procedure, the patient may be connected to a monitor to check heart rate and blood pressure. A device called a pulse oximeter may also be attached to the finger.

The pulmonologist directs the tip of the bronchoscope down the nostril and down the back of the throat into the windpipe (trachea). In patients with narrow nostrils, the procedure can be done orally. During bronchoscopy, the pulmonologist can see the inside of the bronchi in detail thanks to the camera at the end of the bronchoscope.

It can search for or detect conditions such as infection, tumor, bleeding, and other abnormalities in the lung. During the bronchoscopy procedure, one or more samples (biopsy) and washing water (lavage) can be taken from the lung when deemed necessary. These samples are sent to the pathology laboratory for analysis.
