Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy is one of the radiotherapy methods used in the treatment of cancer. Here, it is based on the principle of close radiotherapy to tissues or cavities, tumor beds, using radioactive sources. Radioactive sources can be applied temporarily or permanently during brachytherapy.

What is Brachytherapy?

The brachytherapy is a method used to increase the local control of the disease by increasing the dose received by the tumor before or after external radiotherapy. However, it can also be applied as a stand-alone curettage in suitable patients. In the brachytherapy, radioactive sources are applied by placing them into the tumor and target tissues with unique methods, thus limiting the dose around the source.

The brachytherapy method is the standard treatment method applied alone or in combination with external radiotherapy in the treatment of gynecological cancer.
It can be used as a complementary therapy in the treatment of prostate cancer.
Tongue, lip, skin cancers, and nasal cancers are known to be the tumors in which brachytherapy is most frequently used.
Brachytherapy is used in the treatment of bronchial tumors that fall into the field of chest diseases.
It is also used in the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas.
