A herniated disc occurs when the gel-like fluidity of the discs disappears over time and as a result, the disc overflowing from the ruptured wall puts pressure on the nerves. A treatment method is followed, taking into account the patient’s health status, age, and similar conditions. Sometimes physiotherapy can be followed for herniated disc, sometimes medication followed, and sometimes surgery followed for the herniated disc.
The most common symptom of a herniated disc is severe and prolonged pain. These pains also bring limitation of movement too. If the patient’s pain does not go away with rest, medication, or physical therapy, then herniated disc surgery is required. In such a case, the pain reaches dimensions that prevent the person from sitting up, sleeping, and doing his/her daily work, and herniated disc surgery becomes mandatory. In this type of patient, the last stage is the problem of incontinence of the toilet. The situation is too serious to be postponed and the patient should be operated on immediately. In summary, surgery is an extremely accurate and effective solution for patients whose quality of life has decreased due to herniated disc.
Herniated disc surgery is performed to remove the part of the herniated disc joint that presses on the sciatic nerve root extending to the leg along a line and therefore causes pain. In this way, the pressure on the pinched nerve root is removed and the pain is eliminated. It is an operation with a success rate of more than 90% if applied to the right patients.
Postponing herniated disc surgery may cause permanent damage to the nerves. For this reason, the presence of such a situation, that is, the condition of the nerves should be examined with imaging tests before the surgery. The examinations provide the surgeon with very serious information about the current condition of the patient. Thus, both the surgeon and the patient can foresee what they will encounter during and after the surgery and how much improvement can be achieved from the surgery. Also, the risk of nerve damage occurring during surgery is low.
