Laparoscopic Spleen Removal (Splenectomy)

Splenectomy is the separation of the spleen from the human body by surgical methods. This surgery is performed in three different ways. It has become one of the frequently preferred surgical methods because the time to discharge from the hospital is shortened after laparoscopic surgeries.

Functions of the Spleen

The spleen is in the left, upper, and posterior corner of the abdominal cavity; located just below the diaphragm. One of the most important functions of the spleen is to filter the dead blood cells. It does all these operations once every 20 minutes. In this way, the process of excretion of dead/completed blood cells from the human body is carried out. Another function of the spleen is to protect the body against certain bacteria.

Splenectomy Surgery

Splenectomy surgery may be preferred for diseases such as ITP disease, spleen rupture, or spleen tumors. As a result of the decision of the specialist physician, a splenectomy can be performed in two different ways.

Open Splenectomy

The location of the spleen is primarily decided by imaging methods. However, with the decision of the doctor, an incision is started from the area closest to the spleen, then the spleen is removed without damaging the organs around the spleen. All of these procedures are called open splenectomy surgery.

Laparoscopic Splenectomy

A total of 3 or 4 incisions are made around the abdominal region determined by the specialist physician. The operation is completed by entering the inner side of the abdomen through the incisions. If an abnormal situation develops during laparoscopic (closed) splenectomy, it is possible to switch to open surgical treatment.
