Orthopedic tumors, like other tumors, are divided into two as benign and malignant. Benign tumors are very easy to follow compared to others and do not require surgery as they do not cause any harm to the body. However, malignant (also known as sarcoma) tumors require treatment. In malignant tumors, it may be necessary to resort to radiation, chemotherapy, or surgical treatment methods, depending on the patient’s condition and needs. In bone diseases, especially when performing a surgical intervention, the aim is to relieve the pain caused by the tumor. In such a case, although the surgical operation is required, sometimes pain relief can be achieved with regular radiation therapy.
Tumors, which we call bone tumors, are also divided into two as benign and malignant and occur with the abnormal growth of cells in the bone. Cancers that spread to the bone are usually those that started in different parts of the body and later spread to the bone. It is possible to say that these types of cancers, unfortunately, spread with malignant tumors. Cancer types that spread to the bone include breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, kidney cancer, and thyroid cancer.
If bone tumors are benign, no treatment is necessary, but they still need to be kept under control. For this reason, any growth, progression, regression, or jump in the tumor is evaluated by the doctor at periodic intervals. In some cases, if deemed necessary by the doctor, the tumor can be removed by surgical procedure.
If the tumor is malignant, the way to treat the tumor may be possible by treating the tissues and organs to which it is attached. By looking at the stages of malignant bone tumors, chemotherapy is applied to the patient when necessary. Afterward, the condition of the tumors may require surgery by the doctor. In some cases, radiation therapy can be used to completely eliminate and control the tumor after surgery.
Tumors that we call tissue tumors arise in soft tissues. The tissues that we can call soft tissue are usually in the form of fat, muscle, nerve, tendon, blood, and lymph vessels. Malignant tissue tumors are also called “sarcoma”. Although sarcomas do not occur very often, it is possible to say that they occupy one percent of the cancer cases. Radiation therapy or chemotherapy may be preferred as the primary treatment for the removal of sarcomas in soft tissues. In some cases, it is also possible to see that radiation therapy and chemotherapy are applied together.
