In autologous bone marrow transplantation, the diseased bone marrow in the body is replaced using healthy blood stem cells. During this process, blood stem cells taken from the person’s own body are selected and at this point, they provide some advantages compared to cells taken from someone else. Most importantly, since blood cells are taken from the person’s own body, there is no incompatibility problem during transplantation. However, it should not be forgotten that there are some requirements for choosing autologous bone marrow transplantation. If the person’s body does not produce enough healthy bone marrow cells, this method cannot be used during transplantation. For this transplantation to occur, the body must produce enough bone marrow cells.
One possible method is to freeze a person’s healthy bone marrow cells. After the healthy cells are harvested and frozen, they can be used later and benefit the patient. Patients selected for autologous bone marrow transplantation are those receiving high-dose chemotherapy and needing radiation. The aim of cell transplantation is to help the damaged bone marrow to replace and produce healthy cells.
Compared to autologous bone marrow transplantation, the difference of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation is that the bone marrow is made from healthy blood stem cells from different and suitable donors. While the process is aimed at producing healthy blood stem cells, it may be necessary to apply high-dose chemotherapy and radiation therapy to the person to clear the diseased cells before the transplant. The healthiest choice for details in this regard will of course be made by the doctor.
Of course, as in all procedures, it is necessary to investigate whether the patient is suitable for this procedure before bone marrow transplantation. For this, the examinations approved by the doctor are applied to show whether the patient is physically ready for bone marrow transplantation. If the patient’s evaluations give a clear result, the bone marrow transplant will be approved, otherwise different procedures may be required for the procedure.
