Bronchoscopic Biopsy

Bronchoscopy biopsy, an endoscopic method, has been used for many years in the diagnosis of lung diseases. With bronchoscopy, disease findings in the airways are directly monitored. A biopsy is taken from the diseased area and sent to pathology for a detailed diagnosis. However, in cases where the disease is not in the bronchi, the diagnostic value of bronchoscopy decreases. Bronchoscopy only allows taking a biopsy from inside the bronchus.

How is Bronchoscopy Done?

The patient should stop solid food intake 4 hours and liquid intake 2 hours before the procedure. Pre-procedure blood tests are not routinely performed unless necessary. Prophylactic antibiotics are started before the procedure in patients with spleen removed, heart valve prosthesis, and previous cardiac rheumatism.

Before Bronchoscopy Application

Light meals should be eaten the night before the examination. You should not eat or drink anything for 8 hours before the procedure. You should inform your doctor if there are drugs or medications that you have to use.

On the day of the application, clothes should be worn as comfortably as possible, and materials such as jewelry, glasses, contact lenses, and dental prostheses should be removed beforehand. It is necessary to have a relative who can help you.

After Bronchoscopy Application

After the procedure, the patient is kept under observation for 2-4 hours. Due to the medications given after the application, no car should be driven for 24 hours and legally binding documents should not be signed.

You may have problems such as burning in the throat, tickling, hoarseness, mild fever, mild bloody sputum during and after the procedure. If these problems do not go away within 24-48 hours, complaints such as chest pain, shortness of breath or suddenly spitting up a large amount of blood should be reported to your doctor.
