In chronic open-angle glaucoma, the intraocular pressure increases in the patient due to insufficient drainage of the intraocular fluid, which causes damage to the optic nerve fibers over time, narrowing the visual field and causing vision loss, but in some cases, it may be possible to prevent this with laser trabeculoplasty.

Why is Laser Trabeculoplasty Needed?

Under normal conditions, the intraocular fluid leaves the eye by being absorbed from the spongy tissue between the iris and the cornea, called the trabecular meshwork. However, for reasons that are not fully explained, a slowdown in fluid drainage occurs. With the increase in intraocular pressure, the nerves may be damaged and irreversible results may occur. However, when methods such as laser trabeculoplasty are applied by specialist doctors, it is possible to prevent negative effects.

Laser Trabeculoplasty Method

The laser trabeculoplasty method is based on the principle of increasing the absorption of intraocular fluid by creating small burns in the trabecular meshwork area to reduce intraocular pressure. For this, the argon-type laser is used and for this reason, this treatment is called Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty (ALT) in the clinic. Intraocular pressure reductions are achieved in 75% of treated patients.
