Strabismus

Strabismus is the unavoidable shift of the eye. In strabismus, your eyes are in the wrong position and look towards different points. For example, one of the eyes may look straight ahead, while the other may look outward, inward, or down.

What is Strabismus?

Strabismus, the cause of which is a coordination disorder in the eye muscles that move the eyeball from the outside, is seen equally in boys and girls. In some cases Strabismus may be inherited.

In normal vision, both eyes look at the same point. The brain then combines these two images to form a three-dimensional image. This three-dimensional image gives us depth perception. In Strabismus, three-dimensional vision and sense of depth, called binocular vision, are lost.

Early Strabismus

Strabismus is due to a disorder of one or more of the brain or eye-moving muscles. Strabismus may be unilateral or bilateral, or it may occur continuously or intermittently.

Families should definitely go to an ophthalmologist if they see behaviors such as keeping their heads tilted to one side frequently, tripping while walking, blinking frequently, and closing one eye.

Strabismus Treatment

It is not always possible to correct 100% of the deviations in strabismus surgeries. In some cases, success is achieved with a single operation, while surgical intervention may be required again. The treatment is not over in people whose strabismus is corrected by surgery. The surgery only corrects the gliding of the eye. Strabismus surgery has no effect on the degree of vision and visual impairment. For this reason, people will continue to wear their glasses after the strabismus is changed by surgery.
